Axios: Scoop: Trump team considers nationalizing 5G network

Trump national security officials are considering an unprecedented federal takeover of a portion of the nation’s mobile network to guard against China, according to sensitive documents obtained by Axios.

The article then spins on several axes of rambling.

Courier Journal: Reporter rushes to Kentucky school shooting – and learns the alleged gunman is her son

The editor of the Marshall County Daily Online raced to the county’s high school Tuesday morning after reports that shots had been fired.

She arrived to discover that the alleged shooter was her own son, said her colleague Ann Beckett, who told Courier Journal she went to comfort the editor and take over the story.

Mulitple people who know the family or have direct knowledge of the incident confirmed the identity of the boy, 15-year-old Gabe Parker, who is accused of pulling out a handgun and fatally shooting two classmates and wounding 14 other people just before classes were to begin.

Parker’s friends talked after the shooting about how he was “snappy” when he returned after the Christmas break. She said friends also said he talked about violence and an interest in joining the Mafia.

Hornick said that a couple of weeks ago, when he last talked to Parker at his grandparents’ house, the boy seemed anxious about school and a little bit down.

Family members decline to comment.

AP:3 men, 2 women dead in shooting at Pennsylvania car wash

The shooting at Ed’s Car Wash occurred shortly before 3 a.m. in the Melcroft community of Saltlick Township, about 55 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The victims were identified only as three men and two women in their 20s and 30s. One person was injured.

Four of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene in Fayette County, while another died at a hospital, according to Trooper Robert Broadwater. He said two of the victims were found inside a pickup truck and two others were found outside in the car wash’s parking lot.

A man who lives nearby told the newspaper that he heard about 30 gunshots over a span of several minutes.

Three vehicles were towed from the location. Two were pickup trucks — including the one that two of the victims were found in — and the other was a sedan.

Chicago Tribune:1 shot dead, 13-year-old boy among 10 wounded in city shootings

A man was shot dead, and a 13-year-old boy was among 10 other people wounded Saturday and early Sunday in city shootings, Chicago police said.

The fatal attack happened shortly before 11:15 a.m. Saturday in the 1300 block of West 110th Place in the Far South Side’s Morgan Park neighborhood.

A 20-year-old man suffered a wound to his chest, and a 23-year-old man was shot in the leg, police said. They were standing on the sidewalk when someone fired at them from a white sedan.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the younger man as Jamon Harris of the 10900 block of South Racine Avenue.

The article continues with the list of the lucky but mostly uncooperative survivors.

Chicago Tribune:U.S. soldiers are revealing sensitive and dangerous information by jogging

An interactive map posted on the internet that shows the whereabouts of people who use fitness devices such as Fitbit also reveals highly sensitive information about the location and activities of soldiers at U.S. military bases, in what appears to be a major security oversight.

The Global Heat Map, published by the GPS tracking company Strava, uses satellite information to map the location and movements of subscribers to the company’s fitness service over a two-year period, by illuminating areas of activity.

Good grief. This highlights the level of vain stupidity Americans embrace. But I bet it also gives us a nice map of competing interests worldwide.

Chicago Tribune:Indiana teaching assistant accused of molesting 17 kids

An 18-year-old southern Indiana man has been arrested on charges alleging he molested 17 children ages 3 to 7 while he worked at a YMCA and as an elementary school teaching assistant.

Michael Begin Jr., of Jeffersonville, was charged with two counts of child molestation in October. Clark County Prosecutor Jeremy Mull said Friday that he was filing another 20 counts against him.

Mr. Mull is seeking more victims to come forward.

DallasMorningNews:Johnnie Lindsey lost 26 years to a wrongful conviction and now his life is being cut short by cancer

Music has always been his connection to life, first as a kid in the church choir and then during the 26 years he spent in prison for a crime that DNA tests later proved he didn’t commit. And now, not quite a decade since he was released from prison, in hospice as liver cancer takes over his body.

Doctors say he doesn’t have much time left. Lying in bed, Johnnie, 65, talks of “fighting back with all I’ve got.”

He was freed in 2008, but not before he was diagnosed with colon cancer in prison and nearly died. He was healthy until a doctor found a mass on his liver in August.

Crypto museum: operation Gunman—how the soviets bugged IBM typewriters

Intro, FTA:

The Selectric Bug was a sophisticated digital eavesdropping device, developed in the mid-1970s by the Soviet Union (USSR). It was built inside IBM Selectric II and III typewriters [4] and was virtually invisible and undetectable. A total of 16 devices were found inside typewriters that were in use during at least 8 years at the US Embassy in Moscow and the US Consulate in Leningrad. 1

The advanced digital bugging device was built inside a hollowed-out metal supporting bar that runs from left to right inside the IBM typewriter. It registered the movements of the print head (ball), by measuring small magnetic disturbances caused by the arms that control the rotation and elevation of the print ball. A typical IBM Selectric II typewriter is shown in the image on the right.

Possibly the world’s first keylogger!
