Statesman:Austin Bombing suspect sought other addresses in Austin area before death, source says

The official (chief Manley?) said authorities identified a suspect in the past 24 hours based largely on information gained after police said the suspect shipped an explosive device from a FedEx store in Sunset Valley, a suburb surrounded by Austin. That evidence included security video.

Authorities also relied upon store receipts showing suspicious transactions from the person and obtained a search warrant for his Google search history that showed him conducting searches they considered suspicious, the official said.

Authorities relied upon cell phone technology to trace the suspect to a hotel in Williamson County, the official said.

NBC News:Austin bomb suspect Mark Anthony Conditt used ‘exotic’ batteries in explosives, sources say

Conditt, the suspect in a spate of bombings that terrorized Austin, died early Wednesday after detonating an explosive inside his vehicle as a SWAT team tried to apprehend him on the side of a highway, officials said.

Authorities had tracked him to a hotel in Round Rock, a city in the Austin metropolitan area, Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said at a news conference.

Police were able to locate Conditt using a variety of tactics, including coming up with a list of phone numbers and individuals that were in the area of the bombings when they occurred, using cell-site analysis and high-tech computing systems that can find patterns of callers in certain areas.

A 2012 blog, which appears to be part of a government class project at Austin Community College, lists the author as Mark Conditt of Pflugerville, Texas. Conditt is believed to have been a resident of Pflugerville, north of Austin.

Free beacon:U.S. Lacks Defense Against Hypersonic Missiles Fired From China and Russia, General Warns

“Both Russia and China are developing hypersonic capabilities,” Air Force Gen. John Hyten, commander of the Omaha-based Strategic Command said. “We’ve watched them test those capabilities. So both Russia and China are aggressively pursuing hypersonic capabilities.”

Hyten explained that hypersonic missiles are launched atop ballistic missiles and then fly at ultra-high speeds along a depressed trajectory like a cruise missile or aircraft. They can be armed with either nuclear or conventional warheads and are difficult to counter.

“It goes up into the low reaches of space and then turns immediately back down and then levels out and flies at a very high level of speed. That’s a hypersonic weapon,” he said.

Asked by Sen. James Inhofe (R., Okla.) if the military has defenses against the hypersonic missiles, Hyten said there are no current defenses against the missiles that travel faster than 7,500 miles per hour.

Telegraph:Submarine killer ‘thought of Se7en’ as he cut off journalist’s head

Danish submarine and rocket builder Peter Madsen told Danish police that he thought of the 1990s serial killer thriller Se7en as he cut off the head of Swedish journalist Kim Wall on board his submarine, it has emerged on the second day of his trial in Copenhagen.

The 47-year-old self-taught engineer was defiant as prosecutor Jakob Buch-Jepsen read back to him a statement he had given to the police, in which he described how the macabre Brad Pitt blockbuster had sprung to mind as he dismembered the body.

“I don’t think that there’s anything unnatural in that remark,” he told the court. “In that film, there is a scene where a person’s head is cut off.”

The 1995 film by director David Fincher is notorious for its shock ending, when the character played by Brad Pitt opens a box to find his wife’s severed head.

Madsen, a 47-year-old artist-engineer and inventor, stands accused of murdering Ms Wall to fulfil his violent sexual fantasies, after the 30-year-old journalist joined him on his submarine last summer to research an article on his amateur space project.

Kyodo:China’s Communist Party to bring press under tighter control

A reform plan of party and state institutions, announced by China’s state-run news agency, said the purpose of media control by the party is to “develop and prosper the socialist publishing industry with Chinese characteristics.”

The party’s Central Propaganda Department will “implement the party’s propaganda work guidelines, formulate policies for the management of the press and publication industry and supervise the implementation,” Xinhua quoted the party as saying.

Quanta Magazine:Robert Langlands, Mathematical Visionary, Wins the Abel Prize

Generations of researchers have pursued his “Langlands program,” which seeks to create a grand unified theory of mathematics.

Robert Langlands, who developed one of the most original insights of 20th-century mathematics, was named the winner of the 2018 Abel Prize at a ceremony in Norway this morning. The prize, which is modeled on the Nobel, is one of the highest honors in mathematics.

Langlands, 81, an emeritus professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, is the progenitor of the “Langlands program,” which explores a deep connection between two pillars of modern mathematics: number theory, which studies arithmetic relationships between numbers, and analysis, which is an advanced form of calculus. The link has far-reaching consequences that mathematicians have used to answer centuries-old questions about the properties of prime numbers.
